Gas Tank Filler Shutoff problem

Postby Ms Jean » Sun Jan 03, 2010 11:42 pm

Hi NCMA members,

Has anyone had a Gas Tank Filler Shutoff problem? My 2000 GT started to have problems shutting off after a couple of dollar of gas. I tried taking the nozzle out, moving it around, changing pumps, different gas. My mechanic is going to pull the gas tank filler neck to see if the shutoff is there or else he has to pull the gas tank. I'll see if there is a recall tomorrow.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Hi Jean,

I replaced three tanks in 9 1/2 years with a GM that I used to own. The second one was a used tank from a European junkyard so that one really didn't count.
If you're still on the first one, I would recommend you change it. The symptoms you are experiencing might just be the start of the problems with a 10-year old gas tank. The fuel level sensor, and / or the wiring, could be the next problem. Considering your GT is winter driven, you have been really lucky with repairs so far. Swapping in a new one takes a weekend wannabee mechanic less than an hour. New tanks are quite cheap, but price out the parts & labour costs first?

I had a similar problem on my Mercedes that pissed me off for years. Solution was to pull the nozzle back out of the filler tube a little (mayeb an inch or so). It seemed that when the nozzle was in the filler tube as far as it would go, it kept shutting off way to easily.

I have the same problem with my 2006 and I know a few others have the same problem as well. The issue is recorded as a Technical Service Bulletin and Ford's fix for it is "replace gas tank".
